A businessman in Ankara was targeted by cyber fraudsters in a commercial deal with a foreign-based company over cryptocurrency.
A businessman operating in Ankara realised that his $1.9 million cryptocurrency wallet had been stolen, but was able to resolve the situation by contacting the cryptocurrency exchange.
A businessman operating in the e-commerce sector has agreed with a company abroad to make a commercial sales agreement over cryptocurrency. During the course of the trade, the businessman realised that the other party was not making payments. The businessman asked for receipts of payment to company executives, but then realised that his cryptocurrency wallet worth $ 1.9 million had been compromised.
In order to find a legal solution to the situation, the businessman turned to lawyer Betül Akça. Akça initiated the investigation by applying to the security units for technical monitoring of his client’s cryptocurrency wallet.
In the process, it became clear that the fraudsters had imitated the cryptocurrency exchange, causing the businessman to trade through a fake interface.
In a statement on the issue, Akça stated that they contacted the cryptocurrency exchange company after identifying a legal gap arising from newly adopted customer protection policies in international law. Akça stated that the fraudsters, who thought that they could not be reached after the fraudsters gave their identity information, demanded reconciliation by understanding the criminal sanctions in international law and returned the client’s money.
Akça emphasised that his client was lucky, pointing out that crypto asset fraud is on the rise. Stating that fraudsters have recently resorted to unique methods, Akça added that individual investors should know their legal rights against such fraud attempts and that starting the legal process quickly can increase the likelihood of positive results.
